Sun, Sea, and Freestyle Vibes: My NCL Caribbean Cruise Review]
The Caribbean is a staple for cruisers, but experiencing it through Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) brings a specific flavor of vacation: unstructured, relaxed, and indulgent. I recently stepped off a Caribbean sailing with NCL, and I’m breaking down everything from the ship vibe and dining to the island ports to help you decide if this is the right cruise for your next getaway.
🚢 The Ship & Onboard Vibe
NCL is famous for its "Freestyle Cruising" philosophy. That means there are no mandatory formal nights and no rigid dining schedules.
The Atmosphere: The vibe onboard was casual vibes all day. You’ll see people in flip-flops and swim cover-ups during the day, and nice sundresses or collared shirts at night. It feels totally unpretentious.
Onboard Activities: There is more than you can possibly do on board...We were on the NCL Escape. So there are water slides, Mini Golf, sport courts pools. The list goes on...and on...and on. LOL. just a few things we did... a few games of pool and a game of mini bowling at O'Sheehans ,Spa treatments, and a wine tasting at Cellars.
The Cabin: we chose a balcony cabin on deck 10 aft. I was concerned that we might experience some seasickness being aft for the first time but it was not a problem at all( Hubs did wear Patches most of the time).Overall, the cabin was clean and functional. The style was clean and modern with lots of contemporary touches. I do feel the carpet and colors could use an update but I've seen worse on other lines.
🍽️ The Food: Unpopular Opinion...I hate buffets! Don’t misunderstand , NCL's buffet is nicer than most, but i see no reason to endure the chaos of the buffet when i can sit down at a table and have someone bring the food to me.
Is Specialty Dining Worth It? we had three included Specialty Dining experiences. We chose La Cucchina the Italian restaurant. This is a solid choice. Good food and service. We did outdoor dining and since our port of departure was New Orleans we sat and watched the sun go down along the banks of the Mississippi River. Our Second choice was Pincho Tappas bar. A fun option i really enjoyed. But, i did think it was a little strange that all the plates came out at once. Our final choice was Moderna Churrascaria. This one was not for me. look, i love a good medium rare steak, but this was sooo very rare. I just could not.
Overall, don’t underestimate the MDR's. I LOVE those Belgian waffles in the morning, and I had no complaints about anything i ate there or the service.
One of the best parts of NCL is the massive variety of food. With so many options, you definitely won't go hungry. to answer the question, for me, the jury is still out on weather specialty dining is worth it.
🏝️ The Destination: Caribbean Port Highlights
We hit an amazing mix of islands on this itinerary. Here were my absolute favorite moments from the shore excursions:
Cozumel: Here we chose a Small group tour to the Mayan Bee Sanctuary, Mayan Chocolate Experience and Tequila Museum with Tastings. We loved jumping in to the culture and learning about the experiencing the different flavors on honey, chocolate and tequilas. the BEST part, however, the beach taco shack. the FRESH fish tacos and the roaming Mariachi band!!! check out the video.
Roatan: here we chose the SNUBA experience. We met our group in the port and they drove us to Blue Roatan resort. We were outfitted with equipment and given an overview of the SNUBA experience. The we took a short 5 min boat ride out to the reef where we were able to dive up to 20 feet with our dive masters(no experience or certification needed). If you are considering getting dive certified this would be a great way to see if diving is for you. We then returned to the resort where we were served lunch and spent an hour or so in the infinity pool overlooking the beach. 10 out of 10.. would highly recommend.
Harvest Caye. This is NCL's private island in the western Caribbean.
Here we chose the 1 hour Peddle Board Manatee experience. We loved this one as well.
Super fun and easy and we got to see Manateeeees! You could easily do two or three experiences here but we spent the rest of our time eating an awesome lunch at Mahogany Bay restaurant and at the swim up pool bar.
here are some popular tips you'll hear for cruisers...
If you're booking an NCL Caribbean cruise soon, keep these quick tips in mind:
Book Specialty Dining Early: The popular times at spots like Cagney's fill up fast. Make your reservations on the NCL app as soon as your booking window opens.
Bring Magnetic Hooks: Cruise cabin walls are metal! Bringing a pack of heavy-duty magnetic hooks gives you instant wall storage for hats, lanyards, and damp swimsuits.
Respectfully , I disagree!
we never had an issue walking up to a restaurant and getting a table. ( NCL only opens up 25% of reservations pre cruise. Don't panic if you don't get the reservation before the cruise. I got 2 of my 3 on embarkation day.
We are two people traveling in a cabin. we had AMPLE space and no real need for all those hooks and over the door organizers. (this is coming from and organizing junkie) If you're going to be 3 of 4 in a cabin these thing might be useful, otherwise they are just more stuff to carry on and off the ship.
do do this...
Download the App Pre-Cruise: You'll use it onboard to track your daily schedule, check your onboard account, and book show reservations.
💭 The Final Verdict
Would I sail NCL to the Caribbean again? In a heartbeat. If you are looking for a vacation where you can completely control your schedule, eat whenever you want, and enjoy incredibly fun island stops, NCL hits the sweet spot.
